“Ben yes, I’m performing on stage with my son. I wouldn’t have bet my shirt on this possibility not long ago. When I said yes to doing a second volume of the show Les Ex that we had presented 17 years ago, it was for three reasons. 1. The joy of performing in the most beautiful theaters in Quebec again. In my 30‑year career, I’ve had the chance to perform all over, but the theater circuit is truly a privilege. 2. I wanted the chance to push myself and perhaps earn a nomination at the Olivier Awards. It’s not the trophy that matters as much as the recognition of my work. For some, awards shows aren’t important, but for others it’s a little velvet to be recognized by your industry. And 3. I wanted to work with my son on stage. So for two years we’ve been performing in the beautiful theaters of Quebec, and I’m really thrilled. We didn’t get a nomination for the next Olivier Awards because no one registered us, so the industry didn’t come to see our show. It’s a shame because it’s an excellent show, but once the disappointment passed, I’ve had the immense privilege of sharing backstage and the stage with Benjamin. Wow! It’s just magical,” reads the caption of this adorable video, which clearly shows the joy they share together.
“Obviously, it’s different. First, I had to convince the team that Benjamin was capable. Even mom wasn’t sure Benjamin could do it. The best way to know is to try. It’s a bit like when Benjamin rode the subway alone for the first time; you have to give it a try to know. Since that day, he’s freer in his movements. Onstage it’s a lot of fun to have my son nearby. Each night he does his job like a pro, and I love going to pick him up in the dressing room to tell him his turn is coming while he watches a portion of the Canadiens on TV. The audience’s reaction is always so moving that it brings tears to my eyes every time he comes on, and mom feels the same. Then, he delivers his punchlines incredibly. I couldn’t be prouder, and mom is very proud too to see her son arrive on stage like a ball of energy every single night. Proud, parents! By the way, I’m also announcing that we’re looking for a show producer who would be open to mounting another show with Benjamin and me and even more. We need a producer willing to assemble a show that resembles nothing that exists and who believes in a different way of approaching work, but again, I believe in it. If any producer wants to step forward, we’ll meet for coffee and team up to develop another project that is different for the general audience. Our tour is ending, but it will stay etched in my memory forever. Come see us before it ends.
