More than 700 scientific studies, 95 sessions, and over 30 international speakers. These are the numbers for the 75th National Congress of the Italian Society of Neurosurgery (SINch), scheduled to take place in Catania from September 23 to 26, 2026. The event will bring together specialists from 19 countries to discuss the major innovations in the field.
From Brain Surgery to Treating Complex Neurological Disorders
Neurosurgery isn’t limited to brain operations, but encompasses the treatment of brain and spinal tumors, hemorrhages, vascular malformations, spinal pathologies, head and spinal injuries, epilepsy, movement disorders, and diseases of the peripheral nerves.
According to specialists, every surgical indication must be personalized, assessing the characteristics of the pathology, the patient’s condition, expected benefits, risks, and possible therapeutic alternatives.
Technologies and Artificial Intelligence in Neurosurgical Practice
Among the central topics of the Congress are image-guided systems, three-dimensional visualization, minimally invasive surgery, and the early applications of artificial intelligence.
New technologies enable more precise planning of procedures and better monitoring of neurological functions during surgery. Artificial intelligence is currently used mainly in research, for image analysis and support for surgical planning, while remaining a decision-support tool that does not replace the physician’s judgment.
Access to Care and Professional Training
Another key theme concerns the organization of care networks and access to specialized treatment. The most complex conditions require high-specialization centers and a multidisciplinary approach that brings together neurosurgeons, neurologists, neuroradiologists, anesthesiologists, oncologists, radiotherapists, neuropsychologists, and rehabilitation professionals.
A broad portion will also be devoted to training the next generation of neurosurgeons, with sessions on neuro-oncology, vascular, spinal, pediatric, and functional surgery, as well as in-depth explorations of precision neurosurgery and artificial intelligence.
The theme of the 2026 edition, “Complexity and Simplicity in Neurosurgery: From Anatomy to Surgical Technique, to Technologies and Artificial Intelligence,” underscores the need to transform innovation and scientific complexity into effective, safe, and personalized care pathways.
