During our interview, the singer revealed that this musical direction isn’t new. On the contrary, it’s a dream that has been ripening for years.
“My God, this has been going on for years and years. In fact, one of my earliest loves for music was the Dixie Chicks, the harmonies, the storytelling. I remember being young, watching the channel CMT 24/7,” she says with enthusiasm.
For her, the move into country fits naturally into a career defined by a constant desire to explore different musical styles. Pop, rock, electronic, acoustic, or piano-and-voice: the artist has never wanted to be confined to a single sonic identity.
“I’ve always told myself: Why stay confined to one box when you can try them all,” she explains.
A Confident Artistic Turn
If pop music is part of her DNA, the singer now feels the need to slow down and move closer to a form of artistry grounded in emotion and interpretation.
She describes country as an opportunity to focus on her voice and the joy of singing, rather than the physical intensity of major live performances. This shift doesn’t mean abandoning her roots. The artist remains attached to her pop world, which she will continue to explore at large-scale events or performances:
“That will always be a part of who I am. I’ll always sing my old songs, but I think I can also adapt them into country.”
A Call from the Audience… and from the Heart
Over the years, the artist has teamed up with several figures in the country world, both American and Canadian. These collaborations helped confirm public interest in this facet of her career.
She also recalls a standout collaboration with the artist Clément, which enjoyed notable radio airplay:
“People still stop me in the street to tell me how much they’d love to see me in this space. There’s a real alignment between what I want to do and what people want to hear from me.”
For her, this project represents both an artistic choice and a moment of personal coherence.
“It felt as if country was calling me. So I picked up and said: Hello, I’m here.”
A Fresh Approach for This Album
Unlike her previous projects, the artist intends to take a different approach with this new album. Rather than releasing a full record at once, she plans to drop several songs gradually, paired with a meticulously crafted visual universe.
She stresses the importance of taking time to build a strong identity around this new sound:
“I really want to take the time to establish this sound. We’re going to release several songs before the album drops. I want to create beautiful visuals, wild music videos, and have everything in perfect harmony with the album and the lyrics.”
Although no official release date has been announced, the first song could come sooner than expected:
“I think the first song will come sooner than you think. I’d like that to happen this spring.”
Thanks to Marie-Mai for her trust and generosity. We wish her all the best for what lies ahead!
