Josée Deschênes Opens Up About Her Image as She Ages

I was really very hard on myself

Every week, we have the pleasure of tuning into For Once (Pour une fois), broadcast on Télé-Québec, a show that highlights a well-known personality through an original, intimate format. The concept is simple, yet effective: the guest agrees to four short interviews, led by artists or public figures whom the audience knows and cherishes.

This week, it was Josée Deschênes‘s turn to play along, in an episode that mirrors her personality, filled with memories, sincerity, and touching moments.

A true figure in the Quebec television landscape, she has left a mark on an entire generation thanks to her memorable roles, notably in the cult series La petite vie.

I can see that I’m aging

In a candid, companionable tête-à-tête with her colleague and friend Marie-Soleil Dion, she spoke with refreshing candor about a topic that touches many artists: aging on screen and continuing a career in the arts over the years.

“You’ve been working for 40 years and, like anyone, you age on screen, just like me, just like we all age on screen (…). Is aging on screen something that concerns you? Is your image, for example, something that worries you? And does that concern you more today or back when you were, say, 30–35 years old?” asks her interlocutor.

“No, at 30 I was very conscious of my image. It felt like I was always looking at myself, watching everything I did, then thinking: Oh, I don’t like that. You know, I was really uncompromising with myself. And as I’ve aged, it hasn’t gotten better—well, you know, I’m aging, and I don’t want to go under the knife for now. At least, I can still manage it. But I see it now. I see that I’m aging, that it’s changing, that it isn’t the same. And you know, I do this, and yes, it used to be more beautiful, you know. At the same time, I believe it brings me roles I wouldn’t have taken otherwise, and that I couldn’t take if I weren’t the age I am, and the age I choose to show as well,” Josée replied with a wonderful sense of wisdom.

A deeply moving moment, delivered with great vulnerability by the actress we love to follow, year after year.
