Is Jean-Sébastien Girard Being Rude? Wauthier Responds to Backlash

  • Jean-Philippe Wauthier clarified a recent situation.
  • The passing of Jean-Sébastien Girard triggered a lot of reaction.
  • Several listeners thought they had witnessed an awkward moment.
  • The show’s team had to revisit what happened.
  • This sequence left many people puzzled.

Recently, on the show La journée (it’s still early), Jean-Philippe Wauthier, now back for good as host, took a moment to address a recent incident with a public-facing clarification.

Indeed, following Jean-Sébastien Girard‘s appearance—who was stepping in as host during Wauthier’s professional hiatus—several listeners vented their displeasure to the show’s team. Many believed they had witnessed a moment of clear insensitivity toward Girard.

Facing a flood of comments, Jean-Philippe took the time to explain what actually happened and the surrounding context of the moment when Jean-Sébastien was abruptly cut off in the middle of his segment.

His clarification

“I have a public-interest message to share today. You know how proud we are here of our listeners at La journée (it’s still young) (…) Our listeners are exceptional, which is why when you disappoint us, we’re taken aback. After yesterday’s show, you know, Jeannot dropped by to say hello to the program, and the show ended once again very abruptly with the Allô bobo theme starting, Jean-Sébastien beginning his column, and, much like the finale of The Sopranos, it cuts abruptly, you know. We received an unimaginable number of messages from people who were upset (…) but in those high, double-digit numbers, they told us that these folks were angry we hadn’t given Jean-Sébastien enough time to finish his column, especially since he’s come by several times and each time we don’t give him the time he deserves (…) I remind you that this show is yes, a news program, but above all it’s a lot of self-deprecation as well, and we still master the art of the running gag. So when Jean-Seb shows up to do his column, quote-unquote, after he told us a few weeks ago that he wouldn’t be doing a column anymore, don’t be surprised that he doesn’t, because that’s kind of the idea (…) of laughing at us and Jeannot, and of keeping a running gag. So don’t send us more messages telling us: Hey come on, you’re so rude for not giving Jean-Sébastien enough time. It’s a joke, you understand? (…) On the other hand, note that the next time he comes by, he will do his column,” explains the host, while colleagues note that the joke wasn’t entirely clear.

No hard feelings on the horizon

Those who know Jean-Sébastien Girard well likely suspect that he wasn’t truly offended by the gag, especially since it’s easy to imagine he could have been the one to spark it in the first place.

It appears that everything is resolved: there’s no hostility between the hosts, just a joke whose intent wasn’t understood by everyone. That moment clearly drew reactions from several listeners.

Were you witnesses to the scene? And if so, did you grasp the humor behind it, or were you among those left puzzled by the moment?
