Coming Soon: Medical Cannabis Forum

On September 12–13, Florence will host the inaugural CBD & Medical Cannabis Forum.

The two-day educational event is aimed at physicians and pharmacists and seeks to deepen the therapeutic use of cannabis-based medicines containing cannabidiol (CBD) and tetrahydrocannabinol (THC).

The initiative is organized by Vincere il Dolore ONLUS, with the patronage of Clinn, a digital clinic for cannabinoid therapy, and several sponsors including Materia Medica Processing, an Italian pharmaceutical company dedicated to the processing and distribution of cannabis-based medicines, and SOMAÌ Pharmaceuticals. The event will confer 11 ECM continuing education credits, certified by the Vincere il Dolore Onlus provider.

CBD- and THC-based medications remain a field that Italy has yet to fully explore, but one with broad potential applications.

A recent national survey conducted with more than 400 Italian oncologists and palliative care physicians highlighted existing gaps: only 14% of participants were able to correctly identify the current regulatory reference governing the prescription of medical cannabis in Italy. This finding underscores ongoing knowledge gaps about therapeutic cannabis.

The event aims to become an annual reference point for education and scientific updates on medical cannabis.

The central themes

During the two days of sessions, speakers will present new treatment perspectives opened by the use of CBD and THC across different clinical fields. They will also outline therapeutic applications in treating neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s disease and Parkinson’s disease, and in gynecological and chronic conditions like endometriosis.

The program includes in-depth explorations of cannabis use in rheumatology, neurology, and psychiatry, with a focus on fibromyalgia, multiple sclerosis, and psychiatric disorders.

There will also be sessions on its role in pain management and palliative care, enriched by patients’ firsthand testimonies.

The program dedicates substantial attention to regulatory and practical aspects of prescribing medical cannabis, its integration into the national health system, and the implications for day-to-day clinical practice. The Forum will serve as a platform for dialogue among experts, clinicians, researchers, and institutions on regulatory matters—from the “Lorenzin Decree” to the CBD regulatory framework, and up to the national production of cannabis.

The discussion will also address CBD specifically, including:

  • the treatment of epilepsy,
  • the comparison between natural and synthetic products,
  • applications in gynecology and urology.
