National ALS Day: New Opportunities for Quality of Life and Care Through Research

Today, September 18, marks the 19th National ALS Day. The Italian Society of Neurology (ISN) renews its support for the AISLA-promoted initiative. The observance draws the nation’s attention to the needs of people living with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis and their families, fostering dialogue among the scientific community, healthcare professionals, institutions, and patient associations.

The day also represents an important opportunity to take stock of the progress in research, which is changing the way we understand and address the disease. ALS is no longer considered a uniform pathology, but a set of conditions that can exhibit biological, genetic, and clinical differences, paving the way for increasingly personalized approaches.

Overview of ALS

In Italy, an estimated 6,800 people live with ALS, with an incidence of about 3 new cases per 100,000 people per year.

The growing ability to integrate genetic data, biomarkers, neurophysiological methods, advanced neuroimaging techniques, and neuropsychological assessments offers, in fact, an increasingly precise view of the disease and its different clinical profiles.
