On Headache Day, observed today, May 16, the Italian Society for the Study of Headaches (SISC) and the Italian Society of Neurology (SIN) are promoting the “Heads Up” campaign, an initiative aimed at citizens, health professionals, and institutions to raise awareness about the importance of headaches as a public health issue rather than a mere transient nuisance.
A Neurological Disorder Still Underestimated
Headaches encompass a range of clinical conditions, from migraine to tension-type headaches, and also include rarer, more disabling forms such as cluster headaches and craniofacial neuralgias. In Italy, migraine alone affects roughly six to seven million people and is recognized as one of the leading causes of disability among adults. Beyond pain, many patients contend with nausea, vomiting, sensitivity to light and noise, cognitive difficulties, and problems with concentration, all of which take a heavy toll on daily life.
Experts emphasize the importance of early action: taking medications at the first signs of a headache can help abort the acute attack and reduce the likelihood that episodes become more frequent and disabling over time. Consequently, rapid diagnosis, accurate information, and uniform access to care across the country are essential.
“Headaches represent one of the major neurological causes of disability and require a structured, multidisciplinary approach,” says Mario Zappia, president of SIN. “Today we have diagnostic and therapeutic tools that can substantially improve patients’ quality of life, but it remains crucial to strengthen collaboration among primary care, neurologists, and specialty centers so that no patient ends up waiting too long for appropriate care.”
New Therapies and Research: Advances Against Migraine
“For too long, headaches, and particularly migraines, were dismissed as nothing more than a simple headache, whereas today we know they are complex neurological disorders involving multiple brain systems and capable of profoundly affecting quality of life,” says Cristina Tassorelli, SIN Secretary. “In recent years, research has made extraordinary strides: the discovery of new biological mechanisms, such as the role of CGRP and neurogenic inflammation, has led to the development of innovative, increasingly targeted therapies that can meaningfully change the lives of many patients. The challenge now is to ensure these therapeutic opportunities actually reach the people who need them, preventing the progression to chronic and highly disabling forms.”
The “Heads Up” Campaign
Headache Day will involve all Italian regions through awareness initiatives carried out in primary care clinics, schools, public squares, and municipalities. Informational sessions, educational campaigns, and community outreach activities will be promoted by the regional chapters of SISC in collaboration with SIN to raise awareness about these conditions.
“Headache Day,” concludes de Tommaso, “is designed to keep the spotlight on disorders that affect millions of people and can no longer be treated as minor issues. We must keep moving forward—indeed, aiming higher—in knowledge, diagnosis, and the care of patients.”
