Health Risks of Coffee Pods: Investigation That Shook Major Brands

What would our morning be like without a good cup of coffee? But be careful: a recent investigation by 60 Millions de consommateurs points to certain coffee capsules. And you’ll see that some of the most common ones could be harmful to health. The issue isn’t solely about caffeine… It concerns unwanted substances arising from roasting or manufacturing.
Among them are polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), potentially carcinogenic, and acrylamide, classified as toxic by health agencies. As a result, some well-known brands land on a blacklist due to high levels of these substances.
More surprisingly still: traces of insects have been found in some references, revealing serious flaws in production chains. The investigation is not meant to alarm, but to make us reflect on what we consume daily… And to remind that coffee, beloved as it is, deserves heightened vigilance at times.

Popular Coffee Capsules Called Out

Several coffee capsules rank among the most problematic. Among them: Intermarché’s Tropics Plantation capsules. They are known for their alarming PAH levels, harmful substances arising from the roasting process. Other well-known brands are also named: Carte Noire (Luigi Lavazza), as well as the decaffeinated capsules from L’Or. They exhibit concentrations far higher than ground coffee.
These compounds are not harmless: according to the World Health Organization, PAHs can be carcinogenic. Acrylamide, another detected molecule, is also listed as a hazard by the EPA (U.S. Environmental Protection Agency). Even if the levels don’t always exceed legal limits… their regular presence calls for caution.

And Surprises… Not Always Appetizing

Beyond the chemical substances, the investigation also uncovers unexpected issues. Some products, such as Lidl’s Bellarom ground coffee or Alter Eco beans, would contain insect fragments. While that may be off-putting, experts remind us that this is, unfortunately, a reality in the agro-food world. We all ingest, unknowingly, tiny traces of these ingredients.
This raises questions about the quality controls in production. Between a lack of transparency and standards that vary by brand… The takeaway is that choosing good coffee isn’t merely a matter of taste. Opt for whole-bean coffees, grind them yourself, or choose organic or label-focused roasters who demand higher standards.

Capsules de café nocives pour la santé : l’enquête qui fait trembler certaines marques

While coffee remains a morning staple (and a source of energy), this 60 Millions de consommateurs investigation reminds us that not all coffee capsules are created equal. Between potentially dangerous chemical substances and unwanted residues, some brands should be consumed with extreme caution, or even avoided.
The good news? There are healthier alternatives. Opt for whole-bean coffee, choose organic labels, or turn to roasters who are transparent about their sourcing and processing.
