Guy A. Lepage: Reconnecting with Serge

I feel like I’m reconnecting with Serge, perhaps slowed down by time…

Guy A. Lepage recently posted a message sharing his take after watching a documentary that hits hard, especially for those who know the situation up close: You were where, Serge?, a project that is as poignant as it is moving.

It was on his Instagram page that Guy A. confided that he was deeply moved by the viewing. He notes that the documentary reminded him of just how endearing Serge Thériault is and that he, in his own way, found the Serge he knew.

“I watched this very moving documentary about Serge. It reminded me how endearing this man is. I remember a chalet we rented together, the hearty laughter we shared, the conversations we had late at night, the Parliamenteries we performed, and also the benevolent gaze that Ding and Dong had toward the young RBO we were. In this documentary, I find that Serge, perhaps slowed, but eloquent, and far better than I expected. He talks about himself, about his illness and his career. As a bonus, the testimony from his friends who hold him in the highest regard. I recommend it,” he says, clearly happy to have taken the time to watch it and to reflect on everything he gained.

Online audiences applaud: reactions are overwhelmingly positive

Very beautiful and moving documentary.

It seems that Guy A. wasn’t the only one touched by the documentary. In the comments under his post, viewers also shared their thoughts.

“I was very moved as well. Very beautiful and moving documentary. Sometimes we overlook so much what others experience or hide. We should always keep that in mind when we reach out to someone. He was transparent, touching, and sincere in a great vulnerability and courage to speak openly,” says a commenter, clearly affected, suggesting Serge’s words gave them something to reflect on.

Let’s recall, or clarify, that from the opening minutes of the documentary, the film has him address the illness that has sparked a lot of chatter in the media and among Quebecers, many of whom worried about his health and wondered about his long absence.

“Well, where am I?… I’m not here. I’m not here with you. I’m over there somewhere. But I think the revelations about my illness are what made this blow up. It’s the fate of many actors who age, who fade into oblivion,” Serge said when the interviewer asked how it felt that people were wondering where he had gone.

He also described how things would have been, had his illness not been a factor, at the journalist’s prompting.

“If it hadn’t been about the illness, I would have kept acting. I love acting. Some roles are richer than others; some are more fascinating to perform. But just acting, for me, is like… I’m no longer myself. I’m outside of my body. I’m no longer Serge Thériault. So, being another person makes it easier for me to throw myself into it,” Serge added with a moving vulnerability.

We wish a good viewing to those who haven’t watched it yet, and above all, a lot of warmth to Serge, whose testimony clearly touches and inspires many people.
